I finally made the soup today, on my second cup of it now.
Not exactly gourmet, but not totally detestable either. I substituted chicken stock powder for the french onion soup, and added salt and pepper. Also I used a whole baby red cabbage rather than half a large green one, and 2 smaller tins of diced tomatoes rather than a large tin of crushed. I ran it through the blender after it was all cooked and it is a quite thick mush now.
I just weighed myself before writing this and I was 95.2kg so I think I need to pick a time of day, preferably before I have just drunk 2L of water, and weigh myself then every day or week.
I guess I will see how it goes.
